It seems like yesterday I was delivering fuel for a company to local farms. My first day I trained
with our sales manager, Kevin. If you know anything about farmers they were
always calling about product availability and pricing. Kevin's phone never stopped ringing
and I never stopped joking about it with him throughout the day as we drove to all the customers locations to do the new driver introductions.
I came here from Florida, and purchased a modest 30-acre property that my family and I could turn into a homestead, grow most of our own food and be a bit more self reliant. It was February, and brutally cold considering I've spent most my life in year-round summer. I got through my first winter unscaved, but not without some moans and groans. Spring doesn't seem to exhist here and lazy days of summer must be a southern thing. Summer up north is made for getting things done!
Before I knew it, it was late August, just before the fall harvest happens. Kevin hosted the annual employee fish fry at his home. This was my first ever Wisconsin fish fry and let me tell you, I was not disappointed! Fresh caught Perch, Bluegill and Cod and a plethra of side dishes! He went all out to show his appreciation for us. This was also where I met Kevin's lovely wife, Janet and their 2 children. Janet was a stay at home wife and mother. They had a beautiful home with a few acres and like most of us, they worked hard for what they had.
One morning after fall harvesting, I received a company wide text message. Kevin had a heart attack in the middle of the night, and he did not survive. I couldn't believe what I was reading.
I had just talked with him a few days ago. We were just at his house for an amazing fish fry, laughing and having a good time and now we are sending our condolences to his family and attending a funeral service. After the funeral, Kevin's wife stated that earlier that evening Kevin was not feeling well and he went to lay down. She thought nothing more of it and let him rest. Unfortunately, he never woke up the following morning. I can't help but hear the words she kept repeating over and over in my head, "It was so unexpected!"
So unexpected. That's just it. Life, death and everything in between is so unexpected.
One thing I realised is this. I want to be prepared for the unexpected. We think we will "live forever" so to speak. We think we will be older and the kids will all be grown, that nothing is ever going to happen to us, but the fact is death happens to all of us. It's a guarantee. We just never know when.
I learned a few months later, Kevin's wife had to sell the beautiful home their children grew up in, where they shared a lifetime of memories. They had to sell just about everything they owned. Unfortunately, Kevin did not have life insurance. Sure, he had company insurance that they gave to each employee; the standard percentage based on pay etc., but it only lasted a few months. Remember, Janet his wife had been a stay-at-home mother for over 15 years, so her job prospects were not enough to carry on all the debt and bills they had encrued. They ended up selling the property and moving out of state.
. I knew from that day forward I never wanted to put my family in such a predicament. The loss of me not being there would be stressful enough, let alone to leave my wife to deal with such a financial burden or having her make heartbreaking decisions that I could have prevented if I was prepared. I immediately got life insurance on myself, and eventually decided to become an insurance agent with a specific goal in mind. Value over Price,
but most of all To NEVER allow the financial burden of not having enough coverage or any coverage, impact your familys future financial security. Do not make the same mistake as Kevin and so many others who thought nothing would ever happen to them.
